So what does it actually cost?
Let me give you the honest answer first, because most pricing pages won't. AI visibility doesn't have a sticker price. It's a spread, from free to serious money, and where you land depends on how much you're willing to do yourself versus pay someone to do for you. Anyone who quotes you a firm number before understanding your situation is guessing, or selling.
Here's the shape of the market in 2026, so you have real numbers to work with.
According to WebFX's 2026 pricing research, done-for-you GEO services span roughly $1,500 to $50,000+ a month depending on the size of the business, with small businesses typically in the $1,500 to $5,000 range. Project-based work runs $5,000 to $50,000, and hourly consulting $50 to $300. That's a huge range, which is exactly why the price alone tells you almost nothing until you know what's inside it.
What are you actually paying for?
Strip away the labels and there are really only three ways to pay for AI visibility. Understanding which one you're being sold is more useful than any single price.
| What you're buying | Rough cost | Best if… |
|---|---|---|
| DIY tools & tracking | $10–$1,000/mo | You'll do the work and just want to see your standing |
| A one-off audit or fix | One-time fee | You want to know where you stand, or fix a specific problem once |
| Ongoing done-for-you | $1,500–$5,000+/mo | You want it handled and monitored, hands-off |
The monthly retainers sit at the top because AI visibility isn't a one-and-done job. The web keeps changing, competitors keep moving, and what AI says about you drifts over time. So a done-for-you program is really paying for two things: the initial fixes, and someone watching and maintaining your standing month to month. Whether that's worth it depends entirely on how much a customer is worth to you, which we'll get to.
You're never really paying for "AI visibility." You're paying for tools, a one-off fix, or ongoing done-for-you work. Know which, and the price makes sense.
How much can you do for free?
More than most agencies will tell you. This is the part I care about most, because a lot of businesses could make real progress without paying anyone a cent. The two things that matter most cost nothing but time and attention.
- Checking where you stand is free. You can ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini about your business yourself, or run our free AI Visibility Audit for a scored version across every engine.
- Many of the biggest fixes are free. Making your website text readable, getting your details consistent everywhere, claiming and filling out your Google Business Profile, and asking happy customers for reviews. None of that needs an agency.
What you're really buying when you pay isn't magic, it's speed, expertise and time you don't have to spend. A good provider does in a week what might take you months of fiddling, and keeps it maintained so it doesn't slide back. That's a fair thing to pay for. But you should never feel that the door is locked behind a monthly fee, because a lot of it isn't. Start free, and pay only for what you genuinely can't or don't want to do yourself.
Is it worth paying for?
Here's the maths I'd actually run, and it's simpler than it sounds. Work out what one new customer is worth to you. If you're a tradesperson, a single job might be worth hundreds or thousands. Now ask: if being named by AI won you just one extra job a month, would it cover the cost? For most businesses, the answer is an easy yes, and everything above one job is profit.
But the sharper point is the cost of doing nothing. Remember that only about 1.2% of local businesses get recommended by ChatGPT. Every month you're not one of them, a customer asks AI, gets a competitor's name, and books them instead. You never see that lost job, so it never shows up as a cost, but it's real and it repeats.
The expensive option isn't paying to be visible. It's staying invisible and quietly losing customers you'll never know asked for you.
Danielle Evaland, Founder of EvaraSo "is it worth it" is the wrong frame. The right frame is: what's the cheapest way to stop losing those customers? Sometimes that's free and a few weekends of your time. Sometimes it's worth paying to have it done properly and fast. Both are fine. Doing nothing is the only genuinely costly choice.
How do I know what I need?
Match the spend to your situation, not to whatever a sales page pushes. A quick way to place yourself:
Almost everyone should start at step one regardless, because it's free and it tells you how big your problem actually is. You can't sensibly decide what to spend until you know whether you're missing entirely, slightly off, or nearly there. That's the whole reason our audit is free: find out what AI says about your business first, then decide.
What should I watch out for?
Since this is where money changes hands, let me be blunt about the things that make me wince when I see them. A few red flags are worth more than any price comparison.
- A big monthly fee quoted before anyone's looked at you. If they can't tell you where you stand, they can't know what you need. A diagnosis should come first, and it should be cheap or free.
- Long lock-in contracts. This work shows movement within weeks. You shouldn't be tied in for a year to find out if it's working.
- Vague deliverables. "We'll optimise you for AI" isn't a deliverable. Ask exactly what they'll change, and whether you'll be able to see the difference in the AI's answers.
- Old SEO in new packaging. Some of this is genuinely new work. Some is last decade's SEO with "AI" stamped on the invoice. A good provider can explain the difference plainly.
For the record, that's exactly why we lead with a free audit and a one-time $197 AI Visibility Blueprint before any bigger conversation, and why our reactivation work is paid on results. You should always be able to see where you stand and what you're paying for. If you want, start with the free version and decide from there – no pressure, no lock-in.
